Rules Advanced Mode: How to Delete or Revert a Rule?

Managing Rule Settings: Deleting Rules and Reverting to Default Rules (Enterprise plan only)

In this article, we'll explore the process of deleting a rule and reverting back to the Inherited or Default rule. This functionality is only available in the Rules Advanced Mode. So this article does not apply to Rules Simplified Mode.

How can I revert to Inherited or Default rule?

If you’re not happy with the custom rules that you’ve created, you can revert back to the Inherited or Default rule with a few clicks. You can do this in two different ways with the same result. The only difference is in the level from which you are working.

1. Revert to Default (Platform Level Only):

At the Platform level, rules are fundamental to maintain consistency. The Platform level is the highest and should therefore always have at least the Default rule. That’s why on this level you cannot delete a rule, but you can revert to the Default rule instead.

2. Delete Rule (Available at Other Levels):

When you create or adjust rules at all other levels other than the platform, you can delete those custom rules.

After you delete your custom rule, it reverts to the rule that is defined on a higher level. In other words, it inherits the higher level rule. This could be the Default rule or not - it all depends on your structure.

I know this might sound a bit abstract. Let me explain with an example. Let’s say you delete a custom rule from the Ad Group level. It works as passing the baton at a relay race. Deleting a custom rule from the Ad Group level is like a runner passing the baton to the next runner in the race. If there's a custom rule set at the Campaign level, it's the new runner with the baton. If not, the Ad Group level passes the baton to the Account level runner. It doesn't pick up additional batons that it has already handed off based on the rule logic.

Step-by-step guide to delete or revert a rule:

1. Identify the Custom Rule:

In the Rules table locate the customrule that you want to delete or revert it to the Inherited or Default rule.

2. Choose the Action:

From the Manage column, click the “...” icons and depending on which level you are at, choose an action.

  • Platform level: select "Revert to Default"

  • All other levels: select "Delete Rule"

Revert to Default:

Delete Rule

3. Confirm: Make sure you're certain about the changes you're making. Then click the “Confirm” button to confirm your selected action.

As soon as you hit “Confirm”, you see the changes right away.

If you want to begin from scratch and wipe out all the rules you have created, there’s a quick workaround: just switch from Rules Advanced Mode to the Simplified Mode. This action deletes all your custom rules and restores your account to its default settings.
