Criterion Hub Rules Feature: Simplified Mode vs. Advanced Mode

How to Switch Between The Two Modes and What Are the Main Differences

The Rules feature has two modes: Simplified Mode and Advanced Mode. Each mode provides distinct advantages and functionalities to manage Adspert’s criteria suggestions for your advertising accounts. They both suit different user preferences and optimization needs. In this article, I will explain the main differences and how to switch between the modes. Let's dive in!

1. Simplified Mode: A Quick and Convenient Approach

Simplified Mode is the default view of the Rules feature. It is available to all users, regardless of your plan and offers you a straightforward way to manage your criteria additions.

Important: The title of the Rules page always says “Rules”, no matter which mode you are using. If you are not sure which mode you are on, scroll to the bottom of the page:

  • If there is no text underneath the table, you are in the Simplified Mode and do not have the option to switch to the Advanced Mode (Enterprise plan only).

  • If there is text that says “enable the Rules Advanced Mode”, you are currently in the Simplified Mode and can switch to the Advanced Mode.

  • If there is text that says “return to Simplified Mode”, then you are currently in the Advanced Mode and can switch to the Simplified Mode.

Here's what you can do in Simplified Mode:

  • Quickly Change Rule Actions for Your Advertising Account:
Easily select the preferred action for each account's criteria suggestions with just a few clicks. There’s three options: Add, Review, or Ignore. The chosen action applies to the entire account and helps you streamline yourcriteria management process.

  • Review Supported Criteria:
Access an up-to-date list of all supported criteria across various platforms, including Amazon, Google, Microsoft, and eBay.

  • Understand Action Definitions:
Get clear explanations of what each action means. The understanding of actions make informed choices aligning with your campaign objectives.

  • Enable Advanced Mode – Enterprise Plan Only:
For users seeking a more granular and flexible approach, Simplified Mode allows you to switch to Advanced Mode seamlessly.

How to Enable Advanced Mode (Enterprise Plan Only)

First of all, only the users with the Enterprise plan can switch to and use the Rules Advanced Mode.

To change the view from “Simplified Mode” to “Rules Advanced Mode”, simply click the link in the introductory text. And, don't worry, you can revert back to the Simplified Mode at any time!

⚠️ Important: Switching back from Advanced to the Simplified Mode, will also delete all custom rules that you have created! Which is a great shortcut if you would like to wipe all rules with one click and start with a clean slate. However, if you would like to keep your custom rules, then you need to keep using the Advanced Mode.

2. Rules Advanced Mode: Get Precise Control Over Criteria Additions and Exclusions (Enterprise Plan Only)

Rules Advanced Mode enables you to create custom rules and get precise control over all criteria in your advertising account on 4 different levels (platform, account, campaigns and ad group). A number of different actions offers you a truly tailored and fine-tuned approach to criteria management for your advertising accounts. Here's what you can achieve in Advanced Mode and align criteria additions with your advertising strategy:

  • View Rules in Action:
Gain insights into how rules are implemented for specific entities, such as platforms, accounts, campaigns, and ad groups.

  • Create Non-Filter Rules:
Generate custom rules without applying filters, enabling you to set actions and destinations for the chosen entities.

Step-by-Step Guide for Creating a Non-Filter Rule:

  • Navigate to the desired entity (platform, account, campaign, ad group) in the Rules Advanced Mode table. From the Manage column select the "Add/Edit Rule" option.

  • Choose to Edit the existing rule or Add a new one. Editing pre-populates the necessary fields with the current rule details, while Adding starts from scratch.

  • Select one of the three available actions: Ignore, Review, or Add. Each action comes with an explanation of its practical implications.

    • Ignore:
If you choose the Ignore action, proceed to saving the rule, and you’re done.

    • Review:
If you choose the Review action, you can define Destinations and their pages. However, this step is optional. You can leave it blank and ratherset the destinations manually on the Suggestions Review page for approval.

    • Add:
If you choose the Add action, the next step is to set Destinations and their Match Types or Types for precise criteria additions.

  • Once you're satisfied with your custom, non-filter rule configuration, click Save.

  • Create Filter Rules:
Establish custom rules with custom filters for keywords and placements (depending on the criteria supported by the respective ad platform). Like this you can refine criteria additions based on specific conditions.

Step-by-Step Guide for Creating a Filter Rule:

  • Enter the non-filter rule as described in the previous step for the chosen entity (platform, account, campaign, ad group).

  • Look for the sentence in the bottom left corner containing the link to enable Filter Rule. Please note that Filter Rules are available only for keywords (all platforms) and placements (Google).

  • Once enabled, Adspert automatically creates two entities: “Sub-Rule 1” and “Catch All Sub-Rule”.

  • Edit Sub-Rule 1 by adding a filter, action, and destination.

  • Optionally, add additional Sub-Rules. There is no limit to how many sub rules you can set up.

  • For the Catch All Sub-Rule, you can set the action and destination but cannot set up filters. This Sub-Rule is designed to catch everything else that does not match your filters.

  • Save your settings once you're satisfied with the rule configuration.

  • Revert to Default or Delete Rules:
Modify or remove rules effortlessly to adapt to changing campaign needs.

Conclusion:

The Criterion Hub Rules feature has two distinct modes for managing PPC advertising criteria: Simplified Mode and Advanced Mode. While Simplified Mode offers a quick and convenient approach for criteria management, the Rules Advanced Mode empowers you with precise control and rules customization options.

Simplified Mode is the default mode and is available to all users. The Rules Advanced Mode is only available to Adspert users with the Enterprise plan.

Understanding the benefits of both modes allows you to optimize your criterion management effectively and achieve outstanding results.
